THE SLUM CULTURE, HOPE FOR THE BARRIOS es un documental sobre los Barrios Informales de Caracas, Venezuela y las precarias condiciones que la gente vive cada día.
Del Director Carlos Beltran: » Cada semana me adentro en los barrios de Caracas, reuniendo historias y documentando la dura realidad de la gente que vive en estas áreas. El objetivo es de crear un documental de lo que sucede – socialmente hablando – dentro de los barrios con un enfoque en la juventud, la siguiente generación. La película estudia «por qué» «y como» 10, 15, 18 años son aspirados por el crimen y la violencia, que pasa cuando los capturan y luego pasan los próximos diez a quince años dentro de las peores prisiones en América Latina. Se enfoca en el siempre enfermizo sistema educativo y en la estructura familiar. Pero también, y más significativamente, habla de la Esperanza – el lado más brillante traído a los barrios por voluntarios, fundaciones privadas, organizaciones gubernamentales, todos en búsqueda de un mejor futuro.»

The SLUM CULTURE is a documentary about the Slums in Caracas, Venezuela and the precarious conditions people in these areas endure every day. The film focuses on the youth in the barrios, the reasons why children turn to violence and crime, and the search for Hope through better educational opportunities.
From the Director Carlos Beltran: «Every week I go deep into the slums of Caracas, gathering stories and documenting the harsh realities of people living in these areas. The goal is to create a video document of what goes on – socially speaking – inside of the slums and focus on the youth, the next generation. The film studies «why» and «how» 10, 15, 18 year olds are sucked in by crime and violence, what happens when they get caught and spend the next ten to fifteen years inside of some of the worst prisons in Latin America. It focuses on the always-ailing educational system and on the family structure. But it also, and most importantly, speaks of Hope – the brighter side brought to the slums by volunteers, private foundations, government organizations, all in the search for a better future.»
